Club golfer fails once again to show up for US Open qualifier

THE curious case of a 59-year-old English club golfer who keeps entering the US Open claiming to be a professional and then not showing up continued in Florida yesterday.

Simon-John Dawson, a member at Scarborough North Cliff, once again sent off his form and a cheque for $150 to the United States Golf Association and was listed among the 9,052 players trying to make it to Pebble Beach next month.

He was given a 9.30 tee-off time in an 18-hole local qualifying competition in Lake Mary, Florida, this morning and if successful in that would have played alongside the likes of Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke at Walton Heath on Monday. But that will not happen now because 9.30 came and went without him being seen and his playing partners teed off without him.

When the same happened five years ago Dawson said he had run into visa problems and had not made the trip. He did not play the year before either and his name is also known to the R&A, who run The Open.
