Clement goal sees Scots win silver in Chile

SCOTLAND came to the World Cup qualifier in Santiago as the lowest-ranked outfit and left with the silver medal having seen off hosts Chile 1-0 in the final pool match.

Coach Gordon Shepherd knew that gold and the single qualifying place in the World Cup finals in Argentina later this year had already disappeared when favourites Australian saw off Ireland 4-1 in the previous game, but his charges were already up for the task of securing second.

The Scots forged ahead in the 11th minute through Linda Clement and survived a late scare when Chile had a goal disallowed after consultation with the video umpire.

There were a couple of other accolades for the Scotland team, Abi Walker was named the goalkeeper of the tournament, while the squad also picked up the Fair Play trophy.
