Clean sweep for China on home soil as Booth finishes strongly

China’s Feng Shanshan celebrated a double success at the inaugural World Ladies Championship on Hainan Island by winning the individual title and teaming up with compatriot Ye Li Ying to take the team crown.

World No 12 Feng shot a final-round 71 to edge out Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum by a single shot at Mission Hills Haikou in Southern China.

Feng finished with a ten-under-par total and combined with Ye to earn China victory in the team competition, the hosts finishing on 17 under to beat Thai pair Nontaya Srisawang and Phatlum by two.

Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg was third overall on eight under, with Ye and Italian Diana Luna sharing fourth a shot further back. Luna in fact led the tournament after 13 holes, but a triple bogey at the 18th ended her hopes of victory.

Feng said: “I wasn’t really shooting a low score today. I think at one time I was three behind, but I wasn’t worried at all because I knew I would have more chances on the back nine and I would catch up and finally I got it.

“I was really focusing on the team score and I saw the Thailand team was really strong. They played really well today and they were trying to catch up me and my partner. We were talking about it and we said, ‘no, we can’t let them catch us’.”

Ye added: “I was very relaxed because I knew that playing with Feng Shanshan we could win the team event.”

England’s Melissa Reid finished in a tie for seventh on four under, while compatriots Felicity Johnson and Florentyna Parker were joint-11th a shot further back.

Scotland’s Carly Booth signed off with a 67 – one of the best rounds of the day – to finish in the top 30 on 218, three shots in front of compatriot Kylie Walker (76). The two Scots finished tenth in the team event.
