Classy win for Casamento

Casamento rubber-stamped his Classic credentials for when he joins Godolphin with an authoritative triumph in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday.

Now the general second favourite for the 2000 Guineas, the Shamardal colt was providing trainer Mick Halford with his first Group One winner.

"It was always the plan that he was going to join Godolphin and I've no problem with that," said Halford. "I'm just grateful to Sheikh Mohammed for sending me two horses and luckily enough we've got a good one."

The 2-1 favourite hit the front two furlongs out under Frankie Dettori and gamely held off the challenge of the Aidan O'Brien-trained duo Seville and Master Of Hounds.

"I personally think he might have enough speed for the Guineas, but he's not slow either and stays," added Halford.

Dettori reported: "I think he's probably a Derby horse, but we'll wait and see."

Perhaps the biggest star on show at the weekend was Monet's Garden, who won the totetentofollow Old Roan Chase for an emotional third time with a thrilling success over Poquelin at Aintree. The 12-year-old grey, who took this prize in 2007 and 2009, made all of the running and shook off the challenge of Poquelin to score by half a length under Dougie Costello.

Trainer Nicky Richards said: "He'll go for the Peterborough Chase as long as he's fresh and well. We're not even thinking about Ascot in November."

Klammer, meanwhile, looks to have left Jane Chapple-Hyam's care on a winning note by shading a three-way finish to the John Smith's Extra Smooth Stakes at Newbury. The trainer was keen for her two-year-old to take part in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf but owner Yan Wah Wu plans to transfer him to Hong Kong.

In defying Dux Scholar and Elzaam by a nose and a neck, Klammer (6-1) was paying a compliment to Frankel, who had brushed him aside when the pair met in the Royal Lodge Stakes.
