Classy Kris Gilchrist takes 100m breastroke gold

KRIS Gilchrist confirmed he is Scotland's No 1 in the 100m breaststroke when he held off Michael Jamieson to take the gold at the British Gas Scottish National Championships at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow yesterday.

In a repeat of the British Championship final in Sheffield in March, 26-year-old Gilchrist touched first in 1:02.31, with 21-year-old Jamieson having to settle for silver in a 1:02.48. Both will be in Scotland's team for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October – and Jamieson will be aiming to repeat his British Championship triumph over 200m on Sunday.

Gilchrist, who trains in Paris, and Jamieson, who is based in Bath, are both swimming for Edinburgh University at these championships and another of the squad, Kerry Buchan, won the women's 200m breaststroke. The Aberdeenshire 23-year-old held off Hannah Miley with a time of 2:30.58 and she is now set for her second Games in India. Miley was just behind in 2:30.74

In the 100m freestyle, England's Jo Jackson, the world record holder in the 400m event, continued her comeback from a winter ruined by asthma with victory in 56.75 secs. Second place, and the Scottish title, went to South Aberdeenshire 15-year-old, Sara Hamilton.

David Carry set himself up for a golden hat-trick by leading the qualifiers in the semi-finals of the men's 100m freestyle. The double Commonwealth champion claimed pole position in 50.66 and tonight he will be aiming to add another title alongside the 200m and 400m distances. City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick was second fastest in 50.84 with teenager Jak Scott back on 51.44.
