Chester calls shots as Kelso bounce back to sink Watsonians

Stand-off Mark Chester was the star of the show as Kelso got themselves up and running in RBS Premier Two with a thumping 41-18 win over Watsonians on Saturday.

The Borderers had lost convincingly at Hamilton first time out but turned things around at Poynder Park against Marcus Di Rollo’s charges.

Former Leeds Tykes man Chester joined Kelso over the summer and certainly impressed on his home debut. As well as three tries he bagged four conversions and a penalty for a personal haul of 26 points.

Kelso’s other tries came from brothers Richard and Gregg Minto and Liam Mitchell. Jamie Niven was amongst the tries for Watsonians, but they could not build on their opening win at Selkirk.

Hamilton are top of the table after they defeated Biggar 36-16 at Laigh Bent to give them ten points from ten so far.

Centre Craig Inglis led the way with two tries, while Chris Stannage, John Selfridge and Richie Maxton also went over for scores. Owen McLeish kicked the rest of the points. Charles Cochrane scored Biggar’s only try.

Stewart’s Melville are the only other side to have won two from two after a good victory at Peebles. The city visitors took a slender 8-6 lead into the break at The Gytes, a try from Hayden Lingard and a penalty from Stuart Ker to two Neil Warnock penalties for Peebles. In the second half, Stewart’s Melville took control and added further tries through Joni Hare, Liam Steele, Reece O’Leary, Ker and former Peebles man Donald Sangster for a final score of 39-13.

West of Scotland are third in the table, but will be disappointed not to have registered a win after a quite amazing draw with Falkirk.

The visitors led 36-17 at the break at Cala Park, but the hosts fought back and amazingly things ended 43-43.

Both sides scored seven tries on an end-to-end afternoon, player/coach Bob Wylie leading the way with two for Falkirk and captain Alex Fisken and Simon Kay scoring two apiece for West.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Jed defeated Hillhead/Jordanhill 13-6 and Selkirk won by the same scoreline at Whitecraigs.
