Chambers sets Barcelona best ahead of Euro championships

Britain's Dwain Chambers last night ran a meeting record of 10.14 seconds for the 100 metres in Barcelona, ahead of Dexter Lee of Jamaica and Michael Rogers of the United States.

Running into a headwind of 0.9 metres per second, Chambers broke the previous Ciutat de Barcelona meet record of 10.15.

The sprinter will compete at the European Championships this month, continuing his comeback from a ban for a positive steroid test in 2003.

Also last night, Chaunte Howard-Lowe of the United States won the women's high jump with a leap of 2.00 metres, beating world champion Blanka Vlasic of Croatia.

Spain's Arturo Casado ran the fastest time in Europe this year in the 1,500m, with 3 mins 35.02 secs.

Meanwhile, Olympic pole vault champion and world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva will not compete this season but hopes to come back stronger next year, her coach revealed yesterday.

"Yelena started light training at the end of June," Vitaly Petrov told the Russian media. "We're not talking about getting her ready for big competitions but just trying to regain her fitness and technique."
