Canoeing: Medal agony for Florence in Olympic test

Edinburgh's Olympic canoe slalom silver medallist David Florence was denied by the judges as he narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in yesterday's Olympic test event at Lee Valley White Water Centre.

The Forth Canoe Club star and Rich Hounslow thought they had finished third in the C2 doubles final, but they were later relegated to fourth after Germans Marcus Becker and Stefan Henze successfully appealed against a 50-second time penalty for missing a gate.

"We had a pretty good run, other than two touches at gates 11 and 12," said Hounslow.

"It was a tricky section that we had been struggling with all weekend, but we were happy with our time and it looked like it was good enough for bronze."

Florence also finished sixth in the C1 final as Olympic champion Michal Martikan struck gold to book his place at next year's London Games.
