Callum Macaulay on new mission in Madeira

Callum Macaulay has returned to the Seve Ballesteros-designed Porto Santo course for this week's Madeira Islands Open hoping to draw inspiration from the memory of his finest European Tour moment.

The 27-year-old from Kincardine produced a rousing late charge during the 2009 event to claim second place, his best finish on the main circuit. Macaulay birdied eight of his last nine holes in a dazzling seven-under 64 and the former Scottish Amateur champion is looking to rediscover that spark as he tries to ignite his season.

"It's always nice returning to a place where you've done well in the past and it's hopefully something I can feed off," said Macaulay, who has missed his last three cuts on the second-tier Challenge Tour. "That result came during my rookie season on the tour. It was all fresh and exciting and I was enjoying it.

"I've been trying to get back to that way of thinking. My ball-striking has been fine but there's been a seriousness about my game recently and it's been a slow start. I need to get back to relaxing on the course and just enjoy playing again." Macaulay, who will have his wife Clare-Marie acting as caddie, is one of a host of Scots in action this week.

Alastair Forsyth, who won the Madeira title in 2008, will be eager to build on his fourth place finish in last weekend's Iberdrola Open while a struggling Scott Drummond, the PGA champion in 2004, will be looking for a timely lift ahead of his return to Wentworth for the European Tour's showpiece next week.
