Calderwood says Hibs closing in on fourth signing

Hibs boss Colin Calderwood today revealed he's closing in on a fourth signing following hard on the heels of the arrival at Easter Road of Matt Thornhill, Martin Scott and Richie Towell.

And Calderwood admitted there could even be a fifth new face within his dressing room before the January transfer window slams shut on Monday night.

While Calderwood was remaining tight-lipped as to the identity of his latest targets, he has been linked with a move for Icelandic defender Victor Palsson, currently with Liverpool.

The Evening News understands the 19-year-old played in a closed doors match against Dunfermline earlier this week and impressed. Palsson was spotted playing for Icelandic club Fylkir by Danish outfit AGF Aarhus and was snapped up from there by Liverpool for 300,000 two years ago.

The 6ft 1in star has recently been out on loan at Dagenham and Redbridge and with his Anfield contract expiring in the summer could well be tempted to make the switch to the SPL.

Czech goalkeeper Jakub Divis has also been on Calderwood's radar, the 24-year-old having spent the last three days on trial at East Mains, although Doncaster Rovers have also been credited with an interest.

Although unwilling to divulge any names, Calderwood insisted he had no intention in making a move for Leeds United's 32-year-old defender Jason Crowe, a player he knows well from his time as manager of Northampton Town.

Reports in England had suggested Crowe, who has been told he can leave Elland Road on a free transfer, may be re-united with Calderwood in Edinburgh but the Hibs boss replied with an emphatic "No," when the suggestion was made to him.

However, Calderwood did say: "We are quite far down the line with one more, if it was two it would not be a surprise to me." Towell was the first of Calderwood's signings to make his Easter Road debut, the 19-year-old on loan from Celtic faced Old Firm rivals Rangers last night only to endure a moment he'll never forget as he gifted Ibrox striker Nikica Jelavic the Glasgow side's second goal in a 2-0 defeat with a short pass-back to keeper Graeme Smith.

But Calderwood insisted the Republic of Ireland Under-21 star will prove to be a "very worthwhile" signing. He said: "Apart from the goal, Richie had quite a sprightly debut, he has a bit of personality and drive and has assets that will definitely help us between now and the end of the season."

Former Ross County midfielder Scott is expected to pull on a green and white shirt for the first time in Sunday's SPL clash with Dundee United at Tannadice, the Livingston-born star having been suspended for last night's match, while former Nottingham Forest player Thornhill is currently recovering from a bruised foot.
