Calderwood full of praise for Hamilton

Colin CALDERWOOD sympathises with Hamilton counterpart Billy Reid over the Lanarkshire side's plight this season, writes Alex Schweitzer-Thompson.

Calderwood has admired the style of play adopted by Reid's team, saying that Hibs' opponents on Sunday should contribute positively to the game as a spectacle.

"It's not a situation that you want to be in," said Calderwood of Reid's Accies. "But I like the way his teams play. I like the way they get about - they're inventive."

The Hibs boss expects an Accies side with little to lose to go all out for victory at Easter Road in a manner similar to the final period of the clubs' recent meeting at New Douglas Park, where Hamilton piled forward in pursuit of an equaliser after Akpo Sodje and Derek Riordan had put Hibs two up.

Calderwood recalled, "The game that they played at New Douglas Park, all credit to them for the way they went for it in the last 20-30 minutes. Their goal (a late consolation strike by Flavio Paixao] came in injury time but there were a couple of points before that where they could have scored. They got more than enough bodies forward and they took the chance to get back into the game. They're always cause teams problems with the way they set themselves up."

While Accies aim to produce an unlikely escape act from the clutches of relegation, Hibs will now aim to finish as high as possible in the bottom six. Finishing in seventh place is significantly more lucrative than any lower position in terms of an end-of-season bonus, but for Calderwood the incentive to his players should be in progressing and developing between now and mid-May.

"It's really about us developing cohesiveness," said the Hibs boss. "That's what we're looking at, to see if we can perform better in one or two areas, to keep progressing. There have been bit and pieces in every game, on the run where we've had victories. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, there are always things you can go back to."
