Calderwood excited by new arrivals at Hibs

Hibs boss Colin Calderwood has declared himself satisfied with his summer transfer activity despite having signed just four new players.

Ghana internationalist Junior Agogo became Calderwood's fourth addition, joining Ivan Sproule, Garry O'Connor and Sean O'Hanlon in arriving at Easter Road following the departure of ten players at the end of last season.

But, while admitting four was "not a huge number, " Calderwood believes he's made valuable additions to what is largely a young, inexperienced squad.

He said: "I think the experience and attributes all the individuals have are going to be very important going forward. They really add to the youthfulness of the rest of the squad."

Calderwood revealed he was intent on strengthening his squad by making shrewd acquisitions, arguing: "In the end you want to create a team that excites.

"You do not buy a circus act to entertain but a team that will be successful. The signings we have made do not come by on a whim. They have come by some logical thinking in terms of the group. I am very focused on creating a group that can be competitive and get ourselves to the very highest League position possible.

"We started with the toughest test but the ambition is to have a team that supercedes every other team in the SPL. That won't change until we get there, then you have to maintain it. We will chase that ultimate goal but we obviously have to improve results, certainly from what we had at the end of last season."

Calderwood hopes to add another striker before long but insisted even then the task of building and improving his squad won't end, saying: "It never, ever ends. There will be a limit to the budget but I have never been stopped when I have asked the question because we are obviously adding different characters to the team."

Meanwhile, Hibs Under-19 side will play Vale of Leithen in the Borders on Tuesday (kick-off 7pm), The youngsters had been due to face Edinburgh University but the students were unable to fulfill the fixture.
