Burnett proves his mettle in Welsh win

BOWLS: As well as cementing a place in next season's elite top 16 with automatic entry into all WBT events, Arbroath's Darren Burnett walked away with the Gravells Welsh International Open title in Swansea last night after a 9-4, 9-5 win over Nottingham's Simon Skelton.

A place in the final looked slim for Burnett in the semi-finals, with his Australian opponent Brett Wilkie taking the match to a tie break, before Burnett nosed the verdict 9-5, 3-10, 2-1.

The 33-year-old produced two grandstand finishes in the final, making space from 4-4 in both sets to take his second WBT title.

"I'm really chuffed," he said. "I won the International Open at Burgess Hill in 2008 and to win another title just lets everyone see that I'm not a one-hit wonder."
