British pair see Paris hopes ended

British fighters Winston Gordon and Sally Conway both exited the competition before earning the chance to fight for a medal at the Judo World Championships in Paris.

Two-time Olympian Gordon, 34, had received a bye to the second round, where he scored an impressive win over Panama’s Rene De Urriola, forcing a submission. However, the Wandsworth Lightning fighter was then beaten by Ivan Remarenco in a bout which went to golden score and saw the Moldovan win with a hold-down.

Conway was forced to submit in her first-round contest when put in an arm-lock by Rasa Sraka of Slovenia, the 2010 world silver medalist.

Team GB has yet to make the podium, with Colin Oates losing his half-lightweight bronze medal fight, while leading British judoka Euan Burton, ranked in the top six, lost in the second round of the under-81kgs.

Today is the final day of individual competition, which will see heavyweights Karina Bryant, who won a world silver medal in 2009, and Sarah Adlington in action, along with under-100kg fighter James Austin.
