Britain's David Bolarinwa storms to 100m final

Britain's David Bolarinwa and Jamaica's Odane Skeen won their qualifying heats in the 100 metres at the Youth Olympics in Singapore yesterday, setting up a much-anticipated final for Saturday.

Bolarinwa blew away the field in his heat, finishing in 10.62 seconds. Skeen got out slowly but produced a fast finish to run 10.63secs, beating Thailand's Jirapong Meenapra.

The 16-year-old Bolarinwa has the fastest time this year among 16 and 17-year-olds - a 10.39secs in London earlier this month. Skeen, a 15-year-old whose lanky style has some likening him to Usain Bolt, ran a 10.46 in Jamaica.

"I thought let me go there, go hard and see if anyone can go faster," Bolarinwa said. "It was a good performance overall."

Meanwhile, Sam Oldham's hopes of a medal in the men's individual all-round gymnastics final were cruelly dashed as a critical mistake on the horizontal bar saw the Nottingham teenager finish fifth.

Sarah Milne saw her challenge for badminton gold end at the semi-final stage following a 21-12 21-12 loss to Deng Xuan of China. However, the 18-year-old will have a chance at a bronze medal when she faces Vietnam's Thi Trang Vu in a play-off today. Oliver Golding was knocked out of the boys' singles tennis after losing his quarter-final.
