Break for Catriona Morrison in Ironman win

SCOTLAND'S Catriona Morrison admitted she was stunned to win the Ironman Lanzarote, despite an enforced 45-minute pit-stop to fix a broken bicycle chain.

The West Lothian-based triathlete, who recorded the fastest debut in the event last year, completed the 70.3-kilometre course in 10.03:53, almost two minutes clear of English debutant Louise Collins.

"I'm just over the moon," said the ex-world duathlon champion. "I broke my chain two and a half hours into the ride and waited 45 minutes to get a mechanic. I was elated to finish and gobsmacked to win."

That feat saw Morrison erase a 28-minute deficit to stage an extraordinary marathon run to victory.

Defending champion Bella Bayliss of Scotland was fourth while Spain's Eneko Llanos won the men's race in 8.37:43, ahead of Belgium's Bert Jammaer.
