Boys in maroon dominate the scene with 20 trophies

YOUTH football in the Capital has witnessed standout displays this season from individual players, well-drilled teams and coaches and referees, although the latter are perhaps acknowledged less often.

But, while the top performing teams in terms of a cup count are the all-conquering Edinburgh City under-16s with six trophies and seven-times under-19 silverware winners Leith Athletic, the dominant club at the highest level across all age groups is Tynecastle.

The club's collection of 20 trophies represents a season in which Tynie amassed almost half – 49 per cent, to be precise – of titles up for grabs to all top division clubs from under-13 to under-19 level.

Club leader Dougie Dalgleish has, in the past season, been heavily involved in coaching the under-16 side, a group of players who have caught the eye to such an extent that a mass exodus to senior clubs left the team with just four registered players.

"I'm delighted with the way the season has gone, but moreso that many of our players are now getting opportunities to progress in the game," said Dalgleish. "Our lads have been great listeners, willing learners, they've wanted to do well, and the camaraderie among them has been great. Many of them could've left here before but they didn't fancy the travelling and the coaching here is good, if not better than at pro youth clubs.

"Craig Gordon is probably our most recent vintage, and he didn't leave here until 16. I feel sure that, of those coming through, there will be one or two, like Craig, who will kick on."
