Boyd draws on memories of his Hampden finals in 2008

Boyd almost single-handedly won the Ibrox club the cup double two years ago when he came off the bench to rescue them in the League Cup final against Dundee United before scoring the winner in the Scottish Cup showpiece against Queen of the South two months later.

But last season, the 26-year-old was only a substitute at Hampden for the League Cup decider against Celtic – which Rangers went on to lose – while he was taken off at half-time during the Scottish Cup final against Falkirk after being affected by the heat.

He said: "It's a special occasion to play in a Hampden final and only a select few people get to do it. To do it in a Rangers jersey is extra special and to win is a feeling that you never forget. Hopefully, I will experience it again on Sunday.

"Of course I have had some terrific experiences at the national stadium. The 2008 League Cup final was a fantastic day for me. To come on and score two goals and then score the winning penalty was something very special and I will always remember it. However, that game is in the past and we have to concentrate on what we have ahead of us on Sunday.

"It's the first trophy available to us and we want to go out and get it. At this club, you need to be winning trophies and this is our first chance."

Full-back Kirk Broadfoot looks set to lose his battle to be fit for the clash with his old side. Broadfoot missed Sunday's Scottish Cup quarter-final against Dundee United after suffering a hamstring strain in training last Friday.

It was hoped he would recover in time for the final but assistant manager Ally McCoist has revealed the 25-year-old is almost certain to join fellow defender Madjid Bougherra on the sidelines.

McCoist said: "It looks as though Broaders is struggling. He's been in the gym but it doesn't look as though he's going to make it and that's a real shame.

"We'll look at him as the week goes on and give him as much time as possible to get fit."

The injury is the latest to strike Broadfoot, who was out for nine months after developing a serious foot problem last season.
