The 19-year-old announced himself to the Games on Friday with defeat of world No 1 Welshman Andrew Selby and followed up that victory with an equally impressive display against England’s Charlie Edwards in Sunday’sRound of 16.

However, he faced his toughest contest of the competition so far this afternoon but was again awarded with a unanimous victory over Botswana’s Oteng Oteng to seal his place in Friday’s semi-final.

It would be fair to say it wasn’t McFadden’s most astute performance but his agility in the ring was enough to see him prevail over his tricky orthodox opponent.

There was, however, disappointment for super heavy weight’s Ross Henderson who bowed out of the Games after being stopped in the third round by Joseph Joyce of England.

Henderson gave his all but struggled to cope against the far superior Joyce who had the Scotsman for pace, precision and power with his shots.

Henderson, 26, also from Motherwell, fell to the canvas several times and looked weary before the contest was finally brought to a halt with just under five seconds remaining.
