Charlie Flynn set for first professional fight

COMMONWEALTH Games boxing champion Charlie Flynn is to make his professional debut in the ring next month

The first pro fight for the lightweight gold medallist – nicknamed The Mailman – will be over four rounds against an as yet unnamed opponent at Glasgow’s Thistle Hotel on 14 December.

“I’ve been itching to turn pro for years,” former postman Flynn told BBC Scotland. “I’ve beaten the best at amateur and now it’s time to bring the medals back to Scotland at professional level.

“It is a different world, a different kind of boxing. It’s all about hard punching, high fitness and having 12 hard rounds to overcome any style inside that ring.

“It is a bit of a maze, the pro game,” he added. “It’s a bit like jumping into a lawnmower. It’s a dodgy business if you don’t know what you are doing. If you don’t know what you are doing, you’re just going to get chopped up.”

Referring to his nickname, Flynn said: “The Mailman will live on. I’m keeping the name – it’s just catchy. I worked on the mail and he always delivers, so why not?”

Flynn will be coached by Peter Harrison and managed by Alex Morrison, with Eddie Hearn as his promoter.
