Boxing: Willie Limond to fight Mitch Prince

WILLIE Limond will defend his Commonwealth light-welterweight crown against South Africa-born Mitch Prince at Bellahouston Leisure Centre, Glasgow on 7 June, promoter Tommy Gilmour announced yesterday.

But it must be hoped that the bout lasts a little longer than the Glaswegian’s previous contest, in January, when he required just 116 seconds to claim the vacant title against Eddie Doyle in his 40th fight. Prince, 29, meanwhile, needed just 79 seconds to defeat Bulgarian Radoslav Mitev in his 13th.

It promises to be another evening of explosive action, according to Gilmour, who expects the winner to face former Commonwealth title-holder Lee McAllister.

Limond’s success against Doyle contrasted sharply with the 34-year-old’s crushing British lightweight title defeat at the hands of Anthony Crolla 18 months ago. But Prince, who is based in Cumbernauld, will have his work cut out trying to end Limond’s reign after the former WBU, IBO and European Union champion rediscovered his hunger and desire against Doyle.

“I had something to prove after my performance against Crolla,” Limond said.
