Boxing: Robertson takes Scots title

Craigmillar youth amateur boxer Brodie Robertson won the Scottish 69kg Youth Championships title at Meadowbank to become Edinburgh’s sole
national champion for 2013.

The 17-year-old defeated Denbeath’s William MacDonald 12-7 to continue his impressive form in the ring in what is the teenager’s second title of the year after securing the Eastern District Championship in
January.

Robertson, a trainee plasterer to trade, said: “I was chasing him for the first two rounds but definitely found my feet in the last one which was enough to pick him off. This year is going to be one of my most important with turning senior and I’d set my goals in winning both the Scottish and Eastern District and I’ve managed to achieve that.

“I’ve put a lot of effort in and have got what I deserve so it means the world to me. I’ve now got the British Championships to look forward to so there are bigger things to come. I’ve got a bright future ahead.”

Craigmillar boxing coach Kenny McCartney added: “Brodie beat him (MacDonald) in the Eastern District final this year already so we were always quite confident. Brodie has only been beaten once in the last two seasons so he’s done really well.”
