Boxing: Oscar De La Hoya gives Alex Arthur McEwan extra

Alex ARTHUR has struck a verbal deal with legendary former world champion and head of Golden Boy promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, to feature Edinburgh middleweight Craig McEwan on his next boxing bill in the Capital.

McEwan is currently tied to the Los Angeles-based operation but will receive special dispensation to fight for the first time as a professional in a Scottish ring on Arthur’s show at Meadowbank on April 14.

Arthur, who will also fight at Meadowbank, revealed: “I have a had a long telephone chat with Oscar De La Hoya and he has agreed that I can feature Craig against a selected opponent over eight rounds.

“McEwan has a very good fan base in Edinburgh and, despite having lost his last two bouts in America, can still make it big over here in Britain.

“He won 18 out of 20 in America and I’m confident his fans here will turn out in force to support him.’’

McEwan commented: “I’m delighted by this move. I believe I can not only give Edinburgh fans a real show when I box for Alex Arthur but that I can battle my way to a title in Scotland too.’’

Meanwhile, Arthur confirmed his own appearance on the bill saying: “I will top the bill over ten rounds against a quality opponent. I also aim to have a famous boxer on my bill, who will attract fans but right now – pending negotiations – I’m keeping his name under wraps.

“John McCallum will fight at middleweight while I’m hoping welterweight Gary Young and lightweight Jason Hastie will box too. British Masters welterweight champion, Gary McMillan, could be on the show as well.”
