Boxing: Injury worry for Simmons

LEITH VICTORIA heavyweight Steve Simmons, boxing for Great Britain, emerged triumphant in Budapest, Hungary, in the quarter-finals of the Bocskai Multi-Nations Tournament.

However, his win left him with an injury worry ahead of his semi-final later today against Russian Egor Mekhontsev.

Confirmed Simmons: "I beat my Austrian opponent, Ara Muradjan, by 7-0 on points in the quarter-finals but I've damaged my right hand and I'll have to wait until l the doctor sees my hand and advises me if my semi-final against Mekhontsev – who beat me 12-1 last time we clashed in Liverpool – can go ahead."

Meanwhile, Lochend southpaw lightweight Josh Taylor admitted that he was thrilled about being selected to box in New Delhi in the Commonwealth Federation Games this month.

Confirmed Taylor: "I fly out to New Delhi, India to compete in the Commonwealth Federation games and I hope to add to my collection of international gold medals in this competition."
