Boxing: City fighter Thain aims to tan Toms

BOXER John Thain is using tonight’s fight against Ryan Toms on the Rule Britannia undercard as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

The 25-year-old light middleweight will appear at Wembley Arena on Frank Warren’s card which features Britain’s WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and former British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora.

Thain’s record speaks for itself. After making the switch from amateur to pro in 2010, he remains undefeated from nine bouts, but maintains his dilligent approach as he looks to take his tenth triumph in the ring tonight.

“This is the most important one for me, definitely,” Thain said.

“Just being on this card is a big thing so hopefully it leads onto better things. I’d love to be fighting for titles this year but, when I first turned pro, I always said I would take things one fight at a time and I feel this approach has worked for me. I’m focusing on tonight and I’m not really looking at anything beyond that. I am a hungry fighter and I want to be a champion but that will come in time.”

Thain reveals he has been utilising a variation of training techniques to combat the threat his English opponent holds. It is a bout the Edinburgh figter has been relishing after the initial date of March 16 was scrapped following the withdrawls of both George Groves and Miguel Vazquez, the latter had been scheduled to face WBO world lightweight champion Ricky Burns.

Thain said: “It will be a challenge but we’ve trained really hard for it. He (Toms) is a southpaw and I’ve been sparring with three or four southpaws to prepare for him so it’s something I’m looking forward to.”
