Boxing: Anderson too good for Latvian foe

EDINBURGH super-middleweight Kenny Anderson saw off Latvian opponent Rusians Pojonisevs in Liverpool at the weekend.

The former Commonwealth Games gold medallist did most damage with a fourth-round body shot to take his record to 17-1.

The 29-year-old said: “It was good to get six rounds under my belt. It was what I needed against a tough opponent.”

Anderson is still waiting to learn the date of his George Groves rematch after being stopped by the undefeated Englishman in November 2010.

The British title bout has been pencilled in for September after Groves was injured and venue issues delayed matters further.

Meanwhile, South Queensferry super-featherweight Paul Appleby was expected to be released from hospital today after collapsing from the effects of dehydration hours after losing Friday’s Celtic title bout against John Simpson at the weekend.
