Boxing: Young wants Bladt scrap to be title fight

GILMERTON welterweight Gary Young will fight Denmark's WBO welterweight champion Christian Bladt – although negotiations are ongoing as to whether the Dane's Intercontinental title will actually be on the line.

Young will take on the 46-36 fighter in Kjlellerup, Denmark, on 26 March.

Young, who is coached by two time WBO champion Paul Weir, said: "This is without doubt, a huge step up in class for me and facing Bladt in his own country will make my task even greater but I am 100 per cent confident about this fight as I have been asking for a real test – as this is, fighting so far from home.

"The original offer from the Danish promoters was for me to fight Bladt in an eight round non-title contest at 10st 9lb but Paul Weir is now negotiating for the bout to be a full blown WBO title challenge over 12 rounds.

"Bladt has only been knocked out twice once by Britain's Wayne Alexander but he has only scored ten knockouts in 46 bouts so I'd be looking to outbox him."

Meanwhile, Edinburgh's former Scottish amateur bantamweight champion, Gareth Stemp, is due to meet Glasgow promoter Alex Morrison for pro signing talks. Stemp said: "I've been very impressed during my preliminary talks with Alex Morrison and I fully expect to join his stable in Glasgow."
