Boxing: Tough Scots vest debut for Louise

Holyrood club lightweight Louise Mitchell has been handed a tough task for her history-making international debut against Wales at Meadowbank on January 15.

Mitchell will meet Welsh 60kg champion Charlene Jones when she becomes the first female boxer from an Edinburgh club to represent Scotland.

Jones won seveb out of 11 bouts last year and is being touted as a strong candidate for the 2012 Olympics, nevertheless, Scottish women's boxing squad coach Mark Geraghty remains confident that Mitchell will hold her own at Meadowbank.

He said: "Louise is tall and has a long reach and a good stiff left jab and has very good boxing ability so we're confident that she can do well against Jones.''

Meanwhile, another Edinburgh boxer Lochend flyweight, Liam Tarvit, will also battle stiff Welsh opposition when the Capital youngster goes head-to-head at Meadowbank against Maesteg's Otis Evans.

Evans impressed last year in winning the British Schoolboys 44kg title at Kirkcaldy after grabbing the Welsh 50kg crown in April 2010, making Evans the Maesteg club's first boxing champion for 15 years - tasty ring form that, nevertheless, it doesn't daunt Tervit's Lochend coach Terry McCormack.

"At this level, there are no easy opponents but Liam Tervit has looked amazingly sharp and effective in his sparring and training sessions so I'm confident. Liam thrives on big occasions like this international."
