Boxing: Steve Simmons' Commonwealth Games bid dealt a low blow

Scottish Commonwealth games heavyweight boxing medal hope, Steve Simmons admits he is worried by a Delhi Games cash blow after his previous funding was withdrawn because the Leith Victoria boxer failed to win a medal in the recent European championships.

"I am really worried because I gave up my 320-per-week job as a scaffolder to train full time with the British squad but, with the previous funding now withdrawn, I am appealing to a sponsor to bankroll me for 2,000 so that I can concentrate on bringing back a medal from India," said Simmons.

Meanwhile, the sport mourns the passing of 86-year-old former fighter from Danderhall, Jimmy Scott. The welterweight sparred with American world champions like Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano and triple champion Henry Armstrong while based in wartime New York with the Royal Navy.
