Boxing: Spirit of Haddington's boxing glory days to be revived

MEMORIES of the days when Haddington's amateur boxing club produced fighters of the calibre of Willie Quinn, Steve Wilson, Russell Laing and Willie Leckie will be rekindled this weekend.

On Sunday, the town's 500-capacity Corn Exchange plays host to an event staged by The East Lothian Amateur Boxing Club, with Leckie himself and fellow coach Hamish Colgan overseeing matters.

Hotelier Colgan said that a host of enticing bouts await the fans. He said: "Clovenstone featherweight Ryan McCutcheon did very well last week in Bowhill by winning an eastern youth title but I'm confident my boxer from Haddington, Martin Buist, will give a good account of himself.

"My lightweight Gary Wilkie should also do well against Leith Victoria's Sindeep Singh, just as middleweight McAuley Duncan will be looking to impress against Chirnside opponent David Johnstone."

Leith Victoria lightheavyweight Connor Brown will also feature on the bill and his coach Ray Gibson said: "The bout will be a crucial warm-up for Connor, who wants to win a Scottish title in the national championships next month. We feel this fight should help get rid of some ring rust."

Tough Midlothian middleweight Scott Grant clashes with Chirnside's Michael Black while another middleweight from Haddington, Ian Trotter, will be seeking victory aganst Andy Sutherland.

Boxing at the Haddington Corn Exchange begins at 1pm.
