Boxing: Midlothian well beaten at Danderhall

A MIDLOTHIAN boxing select crashed 6-1 to a joint team from Cumbria and London Club St Pancras at Danderhall Miner's club and had only veteran Leith Victoria heavyweight Steven Lindsay to thank for sparing their blushes.

It was the Capital demolition worker's first bout in 12 years but he managed a third-round stoppage of Londoner Cathal Fitzpatrick

The host squad were already trailing 3-0 to the English team when power puncher Lindsay, showing not a shred of ring rust, galvanised the home crowd.

Midlothian heavyweight Brian Forsyth lost out to St Pancras' Ozzie Jervier but made his opponent toil hard for his points win and Midlothian welterweight Chris Given was impressive in defeat against St Pancras' rival Kieran Thomas.

In an all-Capital heavyweight tussle Midlothian's Felix Onasanwa left-jabbed his way to victory over Clovenstone's Kevin Vincent.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Lochend welterweight Tommy Philbin – scheduled for a top of the bill spot – who didn't box as his English opponent withdrew at the eleventh hour.

• RYAN SMITH is a major doubt to make the bout with Lochend southpaw Josh Taylor at next Saturday's British Youth championships in Kirkcaldy.

The box-off will decide who will make the Scotland squad for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi but Mark Breslin, the coach at Smith's Renfrewshire club, has confirmed they will try and postpone the fight after the boxer cut his hand at work last week.
