Boxing: McMillan's woe over fight KO

Lochend's British Masters welterweight champion Gary McMillan has revealed his despair after his fight cancellation jinx struck again.

The southpaw's British title eliminator bout, scheduled for Friday night at Glasgow's Thistle Hotel, has been scrapped after Paisley opponent Kevin McIntyre pulled out due to illness.

The blow comes just two months after McMillan's eliminator bout with former British champion Michael Jennings was also called off due to an injury suffered by the Mancunian.

McMillan admitted: "I'm not only gutted, but I'm starting to despair of ever fighting for the British title."

McMillan's coach Terry McCormack added: "Gary will now fight Winchester light-middleweight Martyn King over six rounds in an ordinary bout on Friday. After all his hard sparring and training, this is a real sickener for him.

"However, I'm hoping that his manager Alex Morrison will approach the Boxing Board and point out that it is hardly Gary's fault that guys keep pulling out of eliminators, so McMillan should challenge the winner out of reigning British welterweight champion Lee Purdy, and his next challenger Craig Watson.

"The situation with McMillan and late cancellations by opponents is becoming farcical."
