Boxing: McEwan 'runs out of gas' as he suffers first US defeat

CAPITAL middleweight Craig McEwan lost his unbeaten US record by stoppage in the tenth and final round against Irishman Andy Lee at Connecticut's Foxwood Casino.

Alistair Dredge, the Edinburgh boxer's brother-in-law and an ex-fighter, was frustrated that two American ringside judges had McEwan even by 85 points apiece, while the third ringside judge had the Edinburgh man ahead by 86-84 points when the referee halted the bout in the first minute of the last round.

Dredge said: "Despite Craig being decked for a short count in the ninth round he was still ahead on one judge's card when the bout was stopped in round ten so he would have probably won but it was more a stamina problem - he ran out of gas and had nothing left."
