Boxing: McCallum back in ring after ending exile

MULTI gold medal-winning boxer Conor McCallum has ended his self-imposed exile and the Gilmerton light-welterweight will make his comeback in the Eastern District youth championships at Danderhall Community Centre on 23 January.

Winner of Eastern and Scottish titles every year since 2002 and a two-time British national 64kg champion in 2008-09, McCallum quit last year in protest after disciplinary measures were imposed on him after alleged incidents during an international tournament abroad which were later rescinded.

However, he commented today: "The past is the past. I've missed competitive boxing so I'm delighted to get back in the frame in the Eastern youth championships at Danderhall.

"Right now, I'm sitting at welterweight at around 69kg but, with roadwork and hard graft in the Gilmerton gym, I aim to fight in the championships at my normal light-welter weight of 64kg."

Meanwhile, fans will get value for money at Danderhall as the Schoolboys' Championships and the Junior title event will also take place.

• OUTSTANDING Lochend southpaw featherweight prospect Josh Taylor has been alerted to attend a Commonwealth Games 2010 competitor candidates get-to-together at Stirling on 9 January. Taylor will be accompanied by Leith Victoria's Scottish heavyweight champion Steve Simmons.
