Boxing: Lochend boxers do the business across in Canada

Lochend club boxers David Dickson and Lewis Benson scored impressive victories which enabled a visiting Scottish team to beat their Canadian hosts by 7-5 in Ontario.

Lightweight Dickson was far better than his opponent Kyle Allen, forcing him to take a standing count of eight in the first round while light-welterweight Benson was impressive against Canadian champion Andy Mack, also winning on points.

Lochernd club assistant coach, Eric Brown, said: "David looked awesome. He landed a peach of a left hook in the first round before going on to widely outpoint Allen.

"Lewis made light of the fact that his opponent was an experienced Canadian champion and beat him well on points."

However, Brown was less happy about a disputed decision that saw middleweight Mikey McNeill lose on points to Cameron McCabe.

"McNeill gave McCabe a standing count courtesy of a stiff body shot in round two but was never in trouble himself so the verdict was a mystery to us."

Meanwhile, Leith Victoria's Commonwealth games heavyweight hope Steve Simmons has had his financial worries about being able to compete in Delhi next month put to rest-thanks to the generosity of an Edinburgh roofing firm.

City Roofing has given Simmons the funds to allow him to concentrate on boxing alone so he can depart for India in complete peace of mind.

The company already sponsors the Leith Vics club and Simmons said: "I can now fly to Delhi in a 100 per cent happier frame of mind and try and win heavyweight gold there."
