Boxing: Kubas in first-round revenge

QUEENSFERRY heavyweight Jacki Kubas got revenge on James Quigley in the preliminary rounds of the Scottish Senior amateur boxing championships at Lasswade on Saturday, writes BRIAN DONALD.

Port Glasgow's Quigley beat Kubas in the championship semi-finals two year ago but this time the big hitting Polish ace stopped him in the first round to grab a place in the semis at Coatbridge on Friday, 12 March. Another Queensferry fighter, lightweight Lewis Benson, outpointed Irvine's Jamie Bell 10-6 in his first prelim bout before beating Craigmillar's Tony James 8-4 in his second. Leith Victoria middleweight John McCallum impressed in his first bout, defeating Arbroath's Mark Fairweather by 20-11 but, in his second bout, came up against Sean Finney from the Kingdom club and lost by 20-3.

In the youth championships Leith Victoria lightweight Sean White beat Inverness rival Andrew McKay 6-5 to secure a finals place. Also at lightweight, Queensferry's Sean Spence defeated Dunfermline's Steve McArthur 5-3. Lochend welterweight Tommy Philbin is in the semis after beating Inverness's Alistair Chisholm and Craigmillar lightwelterweight, Jason Easton, beat Glaswegian Sam Hill 7-2 to also claim a semi-final berth.
