Boxing: Kevin Skey surges into British youth final

Lochend's Scottish youth featherweight champion, Kevin Skey, took a giant step towards his aim of adding a British 57kgs crown to the seven East and Scottish titles he already has won by convincingly outpointing England's Jake Horoszczak by 23-13 points at Cardiff in the British Youth Boxing Championships.

Skey's coach Terry McCormack said: "We haven't actually been told the name of the Welsh guy that Kevin must beat to become British champion but if he boxes as well as he did in his semi-final bout then he will come back to Edinburgh as Britsh youth champion."

Skey commented: |Horoszczak was quite a tough guy but I stuck to my boxing and broke up his attacks with my jabs and follow-up hooks - now for the final."

Meanwhile, Leith Victoria's Steve Simmons has announced that he is abandoning the light-heavyweight division where he lost a European title fight in Russia last month and will now concentrate on fighting exclusively at heavyweight in future.

Simmons will also spend the remainder of the summer training with his uncle, Kenny Simmons, at an Edinburgh powerlifting gym.
