Boxing: Jacki Kubas dazed and defeated by Dundonian David Drummond

QUEENSFERRY'S Scottish heavyweight title contender, Jacki Kubas, was blasted out of contention last night in his Scottish championships semi-final bout at Coatbridge.

Explosive puncher David Drummond, of Dundee, had Kubas reeling and rocking out on his feet in round two, forcing the fight to be halted just 90 seconds into that round.

The writing was on the wall for Kubas' title hopes in the opening 60 seconds of round one when Drummond exploded a crashing right on his opponent's jaw, sending him to the canvas for an eight count.

Then, on rising, Kubas knocked Drummond down with a fierce left hook – a false dawn that only prompted the Lochee fighter to chop down his Polish rival to the canvas for another two long counts and, when a badly stunned Kubas rose, the referee stopped the contest.

However, one Eastern heavyweight made the final as Denbeath's John Cook hit too hard and too often for Hillpark opponent Andy Wilson, stopping him in the third round.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Craigmillar light-welterweight. Jason Easton, boxed brilliantly against his much more experienced Irvine opponent, Jamie Kerr, jolting Kerr's head with stiff jabs and uppercuts to beat the Ayrshire man by 14-11. Easton now clashes with Cleland's Darren McGinn in the light-welterweight title final in two weeks time at the same Coatbridge venue.

EDINBURGH pro welterweight John Thain won his paid ring debut last night in Liverpool as he outpointed Englishman Kevin MacAuley over four rounds by 39-37.

LOCHEND southpaw lightweight, Josh Taylor, won his first bout in the Commonwealth Federation Games in Delhi by outscoring John Colin of Mauritius 6-1, while Leith Victoria heavyweight Steve Simmons confirmed that he will fight an Indian opponent on Tuesday.
