Boxing: It's a Hastie ending for Scots featherweight challengers

Both Scottish featherweight title challengers, Jason Hastie and bantamweight Gareth Stemp, lost out last night at Glasgow's Thistle Hotel on an Alex Morrison-promoted show.

Featherweight Hastie started his quest to become Scottish 9-stone champion with great promise and style, wining the first two rounds as he speared Aberdeen opponent, James Ancliff with stiff left jabs and thudding uppercuts. However, Hastie's punches seemed unable to stop or hurt the Aberdonian, and Hastie retired in Round 5, looking physically drained.

Beaten contender Hastie admitted: "Ancliff was much, much, stronger than I expected and he drained me."

Similarly, Edinburgh bantamweight Gareth Stemp admitted that his Glasgow southpaw opponent, Jon Slowey, was "far too big and strong for me", as Slowey never lost a round on the referee's scorecard, winning by 60 points to 55.
