Boxing: Fight legend Neill in town for opening

MUHAMMAD ALI'S trainer Angelo Dundee called him "Europe's greatest-ever cornerman" and tomorrow, Edinburgh-born boxing legend Bobby Neill will return to his home city to open a new gym.

Neill began boxing as an amateur at Edinburgh's Sparta club and not only won the British featherweight pro title by decking Glaswegian Charlie Hill a record 13 times en route to a stoppage win in 1959 but who also went on to coach world champions and contenders like middleweight Alan Minter and Alan Rudkin.

Neill will unveil a plaque opening his former Edinburgh super-middleweight star, Sean Heron's brand new training premises at 13 West Granton Road at around 1pm.

Academy club coach Heron said: "Bobby is 77 but he was determined to come north from his present London home to help launch the new gym which will be open not just to boxers and those wanting to learn to box but people of both sexes who simply want to get fit."

Edinburgh legendary middleweight "Mighty" Malcolm McKenzie will also be at the opening which members of the public are welcome to attend to learn more about the gym and what it has to offer.
