Boxing: Decorated Docherty takes up development role with Boxing Scotland

Former Portobello club and Scotland boxer James Docherty is making a comeback as Amateur Boxing Scotland's coaching and boxing club development supremo.

The 33-year-old is charged with improving the individual performances of Scotland's amateur boxing clubs nationwide.

Docherty, who thrived in the 1990s, said: "I had to beat off competition from five other well-qualified guys to land this job but I've been working with the Edinburgh Sparta club recently and other clubs.

"I'll be travelling throughout Scotland developing clubs and helping new boxers to get up to competitive speed quickly."

The man chiefly responsible for Docherty's comeback, ABS chief Richard Thomas, said: "James Docherty was a charismatic guy as a boxer and he was enormously popular with boxers of all ages.

"I'm confident he can be equally inspirational developing our present amateur boxing clubs and their coaches."

Meanwhile, highly-regarded Fauldhouse club coach Pat Toner is recovering in Livingston's St John's Hospital after suffering a stroke.
