Boxing: City date is a timely boost for Young

GILMERTON'S Scottish welterweight champion Gary Young has been given a great pre-fight boost ahead of Friday's clash in Denmark against Christian Bladt.

Glasgow promoter Alex Morrison has revealed that Young will be top of the bill in a show planned at Edinburgh's Grosvenor-Hilton hotel next month.

"Gary Young has a tough task ahead of him against Bladt who has much more ring experience but, irrespective of the outcome of that bout, I am hoping to stage my first boxing promotion for several years in Edinburgh in April.

"I will also be featuring Edinburgh's bantamweight Gareth Stemp, who recently signed up with me, in his pro debut and another of my Edinburgh fighters, welterweight Gary McMillan."

Young is in upbeat mood about Friday's fight against the 35-year-old Dane.

"My coach and advisor, former world champion, Paul Weir, has told me that he wll use victory over Christian Bladt as a springboard towards me contesting a European Boxing Union title later in the year," he said.

"I'm really sharp – as I have to be as this fight is my first step in restablishing myself in the ratings."

Young flies out to Denmark tomorrow.
