Boxing: Beating Spencer tough as expected for city's Cowan

Capital pro featherweight Dave Cowan battled his way to a hard earned 58-56 points win against Walsall veteran of 100 plus fights, Delroy Spencer, at Scotstoun Sports Centre, Glasgow, on Saturday - but admitted that his win proved just as tough to achieve as he expected.

Former Queensferry amateur club star Cowan scored freely with both hands over six rounds but said: "Now I know why so few guys ever stop or KO Spencer - I hit him for six rounds with tasty shots that I expected to halt him, sooner or later, but he was so cute in slipping out of trouble and certainly one of the cagiest guys I've ever encountered in a ring. Still, after the fight was over Spencer told me that he thought that I was a very good boxer, which is a real compliment coming from an old pro like him.

"Fighting Spencer was a steep learning curve for me - a real education in ringcraft.

"Now I've been alerted by my manager Tommy Gilmour that there are plans to have me back in action in January on shows in Aberdeen and Glenrothes."

Cowan's ring coach, Mark Geraghty, commented: "Quite frankly, there were times during the bout when crafty Spencer made Cowan look ordinary but Cowan will learn more from fights like this one, going the distance with durable guys like Spencer (rather] than knocking over poor quality opponents inside a round."
