Boxing: Arthur says McDonagh is just perfect

Edinburgh's former World Boxing Organisation superfeatherweight champion Alex Arthur is looking forward to his planned clash with Irishman Peter McDonagh.

The fight will take place at lightweight over eight rounds at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall on Saturday, 4 September.

McDonagh stopped Michael Gomez, who handed Arthur his first professional loss in 2003, inside five rounds and Arthur said: "McDonagh is no easy touch - he succeeded in doing what I couldn't when I lost my British title to Michael Gomez - but I didn't want an easy fight for my comeback.

"I'm still confident that I can beat McDonagh as I am a lot older and wiser than when I lost to Gomez.

"I have continued to have cracking, no-holds-barred sparring sessions with Glasgow's Willie Limond in preparation for his fight in Mexico City against Erik Morales so I'm razor sharp and raring to go."

Arthur's Frank Warren stablemate, light-middleweight John Thain, will also box on the Kelvin Hall bill against Wishaw's Paddy Pollok, while South Queensferry's former British featherweight champion, Paul Appleby, will also fight an as-yet-unnamed opponent.
