Boxing: Aberdeen Assassin looking to be a big hit

LEE McALLISTER is at no disadvantage going in to his Commonwealth lightweight title defence fight against Samuel Amoako tonight having not seen the Ghanaian in action, according to his manager and promoter Tommy Gilmour.

The show will be the first headlined by an Aberdonian in the west of Scotland and will be shown live on Sky TV. McAllister, nicknamed the 'Aberdeen Assassin', has not seen tapes of his opponent but he said: "I don't look at videos of fighters, I always let them do the worrying. I will take it as it comes."

Gilmour too, is not a fan of watching opponents on video.

"I'm not in favour," he said. "If you haven't seen your opponent then you have to be 100 per cent concentrated.

"You can't go in with a devil-may-care attitude.

"You can watch a dozen fights where someone fights in a certain manner but they might be clever enough to change it the night he fights you – and you've only got one game-plan. So we have to have lots of game-plans. McAllister knows this is a great opportunity for him. He is bringing almost 300 fans down from Aberdeen and Sky viewers will be in for a treat."

At a rather relaxed weigh-in at hotel near Glasgow airport yesterday, McAllister tipped the scales at 9st 8lb 4oz, while Amoako was lighter at 9st 5lb 10oz.

The champion sported a new red-striped haircut and is confident.

"The Sky viewers in for a big treat.

They are going to see the best technical boxer and the best fighter in Scotland."
