Bowls: Kevin Anderson to the fore as Scots land titles at Sighthill

SCOTLAND tasted double glory by winning two of the five titles on offer in the British Isles championship deciders yesterday.

Kevin Anderson, a 19-year-old electrician from Dumbarton, enjoyed a hard-fought 21-12 victory over Gary Kelly from Ballymoney to bring the title home to Scotland for the first time in 15 years. He trailed 5-0, led 13-6, held a narrow 13-11 lead but then stepped up a gear and reeled off eight shots over four of the last five ends, scoring the vital single on the 19th end to raise the victory salute after his win.

Brothers David and Stephen Fisher from the Anchor club in Paisley overcame the pressure of the last few days and held firm over the closing stages of their pairs title decider to deny Jersey brothers Ross and Greg Davis, 22-19.

There was more success to follow for the Scots when they were awarded the NatWest Trophy as the best-performing nation.

In the overall count they tied on ten points with Wales and after going through different aspects of the rules to decide the winner, the Scots eventually edged the title thanks to their success in the pairs.

Today the Scots launch the defence of their Home International series title, opening against Ireland and then facing England before they wrap up the series tomorrow against Wales.
