Boroughmuir/Gillespie’s win through to Under-18 final

Boroughmuir/James Gillespie’s HS are through to the Edinburgh U18 final of the Brewin Dolphin Regional Plate after achieving a sumptuous 27-0 win over Firrhill HS, the quarter-final winners against Royal High School.

For Boroughmuir/James Gillespie’s, Grant Burberry and Harry Smith scored tries in the first half and the scoring was completed with touchdowns after the break by Ben Harrison, James McGinley and Callum Turner, full-back Jamie Greenshields kicking one conversion goal.

But in the under 16 tournament there was a reverse for Boroughmuir/James Gillespie’s after the composite side lost 24-19 to Royal High School, who now take their place in the regional final.

Meanwhile Stewart’s-Melville College continued their good form with a 22-17 win over Edinburgh Academy in a tight match. “We play Stewart’s-Melville in the cup in late October and the game on Saturday showed how close the teams are.,” said Mark Appleson, the Academy coach, who face Durham School tomorrow and Loretto on Saturday.

Stewart’s-Melville will host Galashiels Academy today, in a match that will provide a chance for the Border school, who do not field a regular first 15, to play together as a team.

Several of their players were involved in the South Schools side for last week’s match against Rugby School on the famous “Close” pitch, the reputed birthplace of the oval ball game. Rugby School, with an age advantage, and having played together regularly, were too strong for the Borders scratch side, who lost 36-13.

Bell-Baxter High School took on Glasgow Academy on Saturday, resulting in a 39-22 win for the New Anniesland team.

Meanwhile, George Watson’s College and Hutchesons’ Grammar School met in a 35-13 win for the Myreside team, who remain undefeated this season.

Undefeated, too, are Merchiston, but their momentum was blunted on Saturday after their game against Sedbergh was called off because of an outbreak of mumps at the Cumbria School.

Merchiston, however, will be in action this weekend when they face George Heriot’s School in the first of the under 18 Cup quarter-finals.

Elsewhere, Dollar Academy achieved a 17-7 victory over Glasgow High School and Strathallan had a 31-22 win against Dundee High School.

North Berwick High School achieved a big success on Saturday with a 50-0 win over Loretto School at under-16 level, but in the under-18 game the Musselburgh school ran out winners by 36-5
