Boroughmuir 26 - 10 Heriot's: Visitors rue missed chances in close encounter

There may have been nothing at stake but these two sides contrived to produce an entertaining spectacle with much to commend it, and it is to the credit of both that they sought to play an expansive game with ball in hand.

In the end, it was the home team who prevailed, but the final score flattered Boroughmuir somewhat, a point acknowledged by their coach, Fergus Pringle. "The guys are really pleased with the win and five points but Heriot's could quite easily have scored another couple of tries. To be honest, I was a bit frustrated with the performance and I felt we missed a few tackles so we'll look at that and try to improve."

Frustration was also evident for the Heriot's coach, Bob McKillop, who was nothing if not honest in his assessment. "You have got to take your chances and we didn't. You have to control the ball in the right areas of the pitch but we made a couple of rash decisions and couldn't get over the line. I actually thought over the piece we were the better side but the scoreboard says otherwise."

First-half tries from Harris Jones, Cammy Orr and Johnny Latta, the first two converted by Ally Warnock, provided Boroughmuir with what turned out to be a winning advantage. Heriot's had replied with a penalty nudged over by Graham Wilson before the interval, and closed the gap soon after the break with a touchdown from Max Nimmo, to which Wilson added the extra points. But although their industry had brought them tantalisingly close they could not breach the home defence a second time.

Indeed, it was Boroughmuir who mounted a concerted assault on the Heriot's line towards the end and they were rewarded with a try at the death by Stevie Wilson, which Warnock converted.
