Boroughmuir 15 - 43 Currie: Visitors show no mercy in their hunt for honours on two fronts

It was almost too easy for Currie as they ran in half a dozen tries and tore apart an ineffectual Boroughmuir team that seemed to have their minds on this Saturday's Scottish Cup semi-final against Ayr.

And those wandering minds will not have been set at ease by what a dominant Currie were able to do to them without breaking too much sweat.

The league match did have more significance for Currie who needed maximum points to stay in contention for a place in next season's British & Irish Cup and a long-odds tilt at the Premier title. The win moved them into third place, nine points behind Melrose, with games against rival contenders Hawks and Ayr still to come.

Boroughmuir have long been out of the hunt for league honours so the cup semi-final is their only way of finishing the season with a flourish. On the evidence of this six-try thumping it is more likely to finish with a whimper.

"We knew it was going to be a tough test and it was. We knew how they were going to play with a lot of big runners and powerful guys and we didn't quite deal with it in the first half and gave them too much of a start. We were better in the second half although we were always playing catch up but we can look on it as a good workout before the semi final," said skipper Malcolm Clapperton.

A different interpretation might be that Currie took their foot off the gas after scoring four first-half tries and wrapping up the bonus point while the wind was at their backs. All four tries came from the forwards who were pulling the playmaking strings as well as getting through their normal donkey work.

Openside Mark Cairns' touchdown was the pick of the bunch as he galloped in from distance but lock Ryan Wilson's swan dive over a ruck, No 8 Ross Weston's wrecking ball barge, and prop Alastair Hamilton's short range lunge were impressive on their own terms.

Boroughmuir did improve for the second 40 but the squandering of a two-man overlap just a few minutes after the restart did cause their heads to go down as they realised the fates were conspiring against them.

They did get a try eventually when Rob Cairns went over on the right wing and ran behind the posts but any momentum that created hit the wall as Currie winger Alan Whittingham stepped out of the defensive line to intercept on the 22 to go 80 metres for the fifth try. Boroughmuir replied with their own interception try by winger Jordan Webster who went nearly the same distance in the opposite direction but Currie had the last laugh when stand off Matt Scott dotted down under the posts.
