Borderlescott can storm Temple at Haydock

BORDERLESCOTT can gain a deserved success in the betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock after two near-misses in the past couple of years.

The Scottish-owned eight-year-old is something of an open book now but remains a consistent and classy performer. He was beaten two lengths by Fleeting Spirit in 2008 and went down by a neck to Look Busy last year before going on to win the Nunthorpe Stakes for the second successive season.

Robin Bastiman's star then endured a luckless run in the Prix de l'Abbaye before a trip to Hong Kong's International meeting proved a step too far last December.

Borderlescott looked to have fully recovered from those exertions when a close second to Equiano in the Palace House Stakes on his return and can be expected to improve for the run. Admittedly he has the best part of a length to find on exactly the same terms with Equiano but he is a horse that thrives on racing and will have come on for that.

Aajel drops in class for the Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup at York and the hint should be taken.

Marcus Tregoning's six-year-old has suffered more than his fair share of problems and the fact this will be just his eighth racecourse start speaks volumes. He just found Illustrious Blue half a length too good in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot last time, but given he set out to make all, Aajel can be forgiven for just being found out by a race-fit rival.

Skysurfers looked a horse to follow when breezing home at Meydan in February but he let down favourite-backers on his next start at the Dubai venue. Stepped up to Group 3 company, he fell well short but there may well have been a "bounce" factor about that as he was making a swift reappearance.

The four-year-old ran a much better race when third in the Godolphin Mile on World Cup night and the only minus against him in the totesport.com Stakes at Goodwood is trainer Saeed bin Suroor's current lacklustre form.

Brae Hill looked unlucky at Chester earlier in the month but he can gain compensation back on the Roodee in the Tsingtao Chinese Beer Handicap.

Strictly Dancing is the choice in Newbury's Bathwick Tyres Maiden Stakes, while Lastkingofscotland should prevail in the Whyteleafe Tavern Handicap at Lingfield.

The Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas is the pick of the action at the Curragh this afternoon where Aidan O'Brien's Steinbeck can make a triumphant return.

They race again at the Curragh tomorrow and Music Show is fancied to triumph for Mick Channon in the Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas, while Godolphin's recent French recruit Cutlass Bay is the pick in the Tattersalls Gold Cup.

At Perth's Sunday meeting, Meadows Thyne and Nedzer's Return are taken to strike a blow for Ireland. The former is trained by Tony Martin, a man who must be respected whenever he sends one across the Irish Sea. The nine- year-old lined up at Aintree last time and finished a fine third behind Alderley Rover when possibly left with too much to do in the closing stages.

Previously a winner at Gowran, Meadows Thyne had shot up the weights for that victory and has again gone up a couple of pounds for his Aintree defeat. He does not boast the best runs to wins ratio but given a more positive ride, he can claim the Universal Inspection (UK) Novices' Handicap Chase.

Nedzer's Return represents Gordon Elliott and he has been quite the money spinner this year. The eight-year-old is seeking a hat-trick at Perth after two quickfire chase wins last month. Those victories have seen his rating over fences rise to 145 but switching back to the smaller obstacles in the Provost's Plate Challenge Trophy Novices' Hurdle, he is of plenty of interest.

Lothian Falcon will take some beating if he can return to his best in the Newwave Recruitment Scotland Perth Gold Cup Handicap Chase. A Grade Three winner in 2007, the 11-year-old finished fifth in the bet365 Gold Cup the following April but has had his opportunities limited by injury since.

Three starts since his return have yielded disappointing results but he was a shade unlucky to unseat his rider early on in this year's Scottish National and he was not right when pulled up in another crack at the bet365. Peter Maddison will surely have rectified those issues now and he could be the solution to a trick event with conditions to suit.

• Ante-post favourite St Nicholas Abbey features among a total of 19 horses remaining in the Investec Derby at Epsom following the latest forfeits.

There is one final chance for connections to enter in the contest at the five-day declaration stage when a supplementary fee of 75,000 is needed. That is thought to be the likeliest course of action for Godolphin's Rewilding, an impressive winner at Goodwood this week.
